Are you at risk of VAT scams?

Scammers are targeting companies that are in a VAT refund position. The scammers aim to get the repayments made to their own bank account, by changing the bank account details of a genuine business to theirs.

The fraudsters send forms to HMRC requesting a change of bank details by obtaining firms’ details, such as bank account numbers and personal information about directors.

HMRC will always write to business owners confirming changes that have been made, therefore you must always read correspondence from HMRC and regularly check your HMRC online account to ensure the business details held are correct. Please note, HMRC will never send notifications via email or text.

HMRC are putting extra measures in place to prevent the scams, however if you do receive any emails asking for personal information, please forward them to phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk.

If ever you’re in doubt, please feel free to contact Jake on 01227 277667, or by emailing him at j.mackenzie@mphaccountants.co.uk.
