Recently a café in London (not a client of ours) had missed its deadline to automatically enrol staff into a pension.
The Pension Regulator had launched an inquiry and arranged an inspection on the employer’s records. This investigation was cancelled once the employer had said that the company had met its duties.
However, after the Pension Regulator looked into this further, they found out that this in fact was not true, therefore they took the employer to court for recklessly providing false or misleading information. The taxpayer has now been fined, ordered to pay costs as well as a victim surcharge totaling just under £8,000.
