As one scam is closed down it seems that another is opened.

Currently the most effective is where you receive an automated call quoting a tax reference number, giving an 0300 number to callback.  

If you check the number on line, it would seem that this is a legitimate HMRC number; however it is not.

Over the last three years, reported scams have increased from 407 reports to 104,774.

HMRC have already blocked over 1,000 scam numbers over the last 10 months.
