Following todays announcement, from the 1st of November, for the next six months, the Job Support Scheme will protect viable jobs in businesses who are facing lower demand over the winter months due to Covid-19.
Firstly, Mr Sunak said the scheme will only support “viable jobs”. To ensure that, employees must work one-third of their hours and be paid by their employers for that time.
For the remaining hours not worked, the Government and the employer will each pay one-third of the wages. So those working a third of their hours will receive at least 77% of their pay.
Secondly, support will be targeted at “firms that need it the most”. Therefore, all SMEs will be eligible for the scheme, but larger businesses will only be eligible if their turnover has fallen during the crisis.
Thirdly, it will be open to all employers, even if they did not used the furlough scheme previously.
The payroll team will issue further guidance on this, once published by HMRC. If you have any questions please feel free to email me, m.morrish@mphaccountants.co.uk
